We’ve got our first trailer of Nosferatu! I won’t lie, besides Longlegs, this is definitely my most anticipated horror movie of the year. Robert Eggers always hits that dark, moody, folky horror spot in my heart.
“A gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.”
Lily-Rose Depp plays Ellen Hutter, the woman of Count Orlok’s obsession. That beginning scene of her in the trailer definitely has me hooked. It looks like Orlok may or may not be as seductive at wooing her as Gary Oldman was in Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992). I think it’ll be more of a push and pull, mostly based on an interview with Skarsgård about his character.
“He’s gross,” he said of the character. “But it is very sexualized. It’s playing with a sexual fetish about the power of the monster and what that appeal has to you. Hopefully you’ll get a little bit attracted by it and disgusted by your attraction at the same time.”

Bill Skarsgård plays the titular character of Nosferatu aka Count Orlok. I’m glad they seem to be keeping him hidden, and I hope it stays that way. Skarsgård does such a wonderful job in prosthetics that I’d like to see his performance as Orlok on the big screen first.
We also see some scenes of Nicholas Hoult and Willem Dafoe playing Thomas Hutter and Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz (say that five times fast). Hoult looks like the perfect Jonathan Harker-esque character so far—terrified but willing to do what he needs to save his wife. And Willem Dafoe is amazing as always, although I do wonder if I’ll need some time to adjust at first just because his voice is so familiar.
All-in-all this movie looks gorgeous and like it’s going to be an out-of-the-park hit for Robert Eggers with the excitement I’m seeing online for it. At first, I questioned the Christmas release date because a movie that’s essentially about Dracula seems more fitting for October. But a winter mood fits with the cool blue color grading, barren landscapes, and gothic vibes. I’m definitely bringing a blanket scarf to the theater and getting cozy for this one.
Focus Features releases Nosferatu December 25, 2024.
